HISTORIC SPRINGDALE SUMMER PICNIC
Music, Storytelling, Trolley Rides,
Antique Cars and a Morning Run!
Plan now to attend this Old Fashioned Summer Picnic at Historic Springdale Cemetery on Sunday, August 19, 2007. The event begins at 1:00 pm and runs through 5:00 pm, with music, Trolley rides, historic tours, antique cars, storytelling and nature hikes. Please use the main entrance on Prospect Road. There will also be overflow parking at Woodruff High School and shuttle rides available at the East End entrance.
Historically, cemeteries were designed as parks, where families would enjoy a Sunday afternoon outing. There will be guided hikes through the oak savannah and other natural areas. We will be featuring the music of the Prescott Family and Barry Cloyd with performances from the lovely Soldiers Hill Bandstand. Prairie Folklore theatre will be there to reprise some of their more popular characters from their annual historic cemetery tour; professional actors in period costume will represent Civil War veterans and some of Springdale’s more fascinating residents including Henry Detweiller, Lydia Moss Bradley and Octave Chanute.
This beautiful Sunday outing will offer guided walking tours, horse and buggy rides, antique car displays and Civil war re-enactments. There will also be an early morning race sponsored by the Illinois Valley Striders.
Spotted Cow will provide ice cream and there will be open areas for folks to bring blankets, lawn chairs and their own picnic baskets. There will also be some concessions, water, soda and snacks available for purchase.
Free Trolleys provided by City Link will circle the cemetery with stops at the many points of interest throughout the grounds, and to the nearby free parking lot at Woodruff High School. In order to maintain the Picnic’s special intimacy, no private cars will be allowed inside the Cemetery during the event. The trolleys are wheelchair accessible. Bicycles are welcome and a great way to see all the sights.
This event is sponsored by the Springdale Foundation, Peoria Park District, Peoria Historical Society, Peoria Veterans Groups, Peoria Wilds, and Prairie Folklore Theatre. The tremendous beauty of Springdale and its incredible history are now a public treasure in this active cemetery with more than 70,000 burials and more than 50,000 lots available. Come celebrate Springdale with an old fashioned picnic! For more information contact the Cemetery office at 681-1400 or visit their website: Springdale Cemetery.
